Our Mission

Why we do what we do

We have a deep desire to nurture the land on which we live.  Our modern society has become detached from the land and the food we eat.  Nature is tied to the cycles of the seasons and the year, but most people do not recognize this in the food that they eat.  When we farm, we are reminded daily of these cycles that tie us to the soil.

While modern methods and technology are often a good thing, they insulate us from the cycles of life.  We are attempting to mix what is valuable in modern society with traditional methods that are so quickly forgotten when they aren't practiced.

At Philsons' Bushel and a Peck Farm, we are using draft horses for most of our farming needs.  While this isn't as easy as starting up a tractor, the horses give nutrients back to the land instead of using diesel fuel.  We do have some equipment that runs on fossil fuels, but their use is minimal.  Thus the mixture of modern and traditional.

Our goal is to nurture the land so that it produces nutrient-dense food to nourish our family and our community.  We are teaching our children to be ever-mindful of their connection with the land.  And in the process, we want to share what we are learning along the journey with others.
