We are a family farm located in northwestern Pennsylvania specializing in maple syrup. We also raise grass-fed beef and lamb, pastured poultry, and eggs.
Welcome to our farm!
Welcome to our farm! We are living our dream of raising our children while working on the land that we steward for future generations. On our farm you will find draft horses, sheep, ducks, chickens, dogs and cats, as well lots of maple trees that we use to make liquid gold (aka maple syrup) during the warming days of late winter. We grow many of the vegetables that our family eats, as well as a few to sell. Other products include eggs, chicken, and lamb. In addition, we planted an orchard in 2015 with hopes of harvesting a variety of fruits in the coming years.
Come visit us at our seasonal store at Grove City Premium Outlets during November and December. You will find not only our maple products, but a host of other products produced and sold by local artisans. The store is open October 7 through January 2 this year, 7 days a week. We are in store #925, just down from Eddie Bauer.
Our story
Eric grew up on this farm, but then he moved on to create a life of his own. After college, a family, and many years as a stone mason in Michigan, he felt drawn back to his roots. The move back to Pennsylvania brought long commutes for his trade, and he yearned to spend more time with his family.
A 200-acre farm sitting idle.
Eric's parents had retired from farming, but they still lived on the farm. Since we had always grown a garden and preserved much of its bounty, we decided to try our hand at market gardening. While very rewarding, we quickly realized that Mercer County didn't really need another produce farm. We still grow vegetables, but most are for our family's use.
Animals
On our farm we care for draft horses that are used for farm work and to make manure to enrich the soil. We also pasture sheep for meat and added a calf this year. You can also find ducks, dogs, and cats around the farm.
Maple Syrup
For a few years, we tapped the trees in our front yard and boiled the sap in a big copper kettle in our driveway, finishing it on our kitchen stove. Because we have large stands of maple in our woods, Eric asked our friend Jim to look at the possibility of maple production. After a favorable report, Eric asked Jim to recommend the best place to purchase maple equipment. Jim said, "Come buy me out. I'm looking to retire." So we purchased his business and his recipes, and he mentored us for our first year of production.
Developing our products
While we continue to offer many of the products that Brown's Pure Maple was known for, we have also developed some of our own recipes. One of our specialties is Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple Syrup, aged in bourbon barrels from award-winning Wigle Whiskey in Pittsburgh. Our new Maple Wing Sauce is another favorite, selling out quickly at events.
